A useful rule: with 10–14 days you can mix classes, with comfortable four-star hotels throughout and one or two luxury highlights, for significantly less than an all-five-star itinerary.

How Group Size Changes the Price

On a private tour, the car and guide are fixed daily costs shared by the whole group, while hotel rooms, tickets and meals stay per person. The more people share the car and guide, the lower the per-person price. That's why a private tour for four often costs less per head than a group tour with a large-vehicle surcharge.

Standard rates include 8–10 hours of service per day and 100–120 km within the area, covering fuel, tolls, parking, airport fees, and the driver's meals and accommodation.

Overtime after about 7 PM is typically charged at $6–10 per hour. Transfer days between regions (for example, Hanoi to Ninh Binh and then Halong) may add a distance surcharge, so ask whether the rate already includes it.

Licensed Private Guide

Guides are licensed by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and work a standard 8-hour day.

• Tips. A private "four-star" itinerary quoted at $60 per person per day isn't a bargain. Costs are being cut somewhere you'll feel:

• Driver-guide. A driver with tourist English who can't explain history, and waits outside the gates because only licensed guides are allowed inside with you.
• Out-of-center hotels. A "4-star" hotel 7–10 km from Hanoi's Old Quarter turns every evening into a taxi bill.
• Shopping-stop economics. Two or three hours a day in pearl, silk or agarwood workshops exist to pay the tour a 20–30% commission. That's how the cheap quote balances.
• Old vehicles. A seven-year-old car with weak AC on a four-hour transfer is a memory you don't want.
