Overview

Evening Hue food tour: explore bún bò, bánh bèo, nem lụi, cơm hến, royal sweet soup at local eateries. Choose walking or cyclo through the old town.

Huế — The Most Refined Culinary Capital of Vietnam

People say: if you go to Hue without trying bún bò, without savoring bánh bèo chén, without holding a cup of salted coffee on the street — then you haven't truly been to Hue. The cuisine of the ancient capital is not just food; it is heritage. Every Hue dish carries the mark of the Nguyễn dynasty, the sophistication of royal cuisine blended with rustic folk traditions. The spiciness of chili, the saltiness of mắm ruốc, the sweetness of shrimp powder — all create a symphony of flavors found nowhere else.

The Hue food tour is the perfect evening journey after a day visiting the Imperial Citadel and royal tombs. You will join a local guide to weave through small alleys, visit family-run eateries that have been around for 20-30 years, and taste each Hue specialty the way locals enjoy them.

Choose Your Own Way to Explore

The tour offers a walking or cyclo option:

Walking Food Tour: For those with a spirit of discovery. You walk through narrow alleys in the heart of the old town, where cars cannot go, where family-run eateries nestle in moss-covered houses. You will stop at 5-7 different eateries, each with one dish, each dish with a story.

Cyclo Food Tour: For a romantic evening. Sitting on a cyclo, you leisurely glide across Trường Tiền Bridge, along the poetic Perfume River, through lantern-lit streets, and stop at the best eateries in Hue. Eating, watching the city, and listening to the guide tell stories of Hue — a very "chill" experience.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Evening Hue Food Tour Itinerary

17:00 – 17:30: | Pickup & departure
Your guide picks you up at your hotel in central Hue or a meeting point. If you choose the cyclo tour, you board the cyclo and begin a leisurely journey through the old town. If you choose the walking tour, you and your guide walk into the small alleys — where Hue's cuisine truly hides.
17:30: | Stop 1 — Bún bò Huế
No Hue food tour can start without bún bò. You visit a family-run bún bò shop that has been around for 30 years — where the pot of broth simmered with beef bones, lemongrass, and mắm ruốc has been bubbling since early morning. The bowl is generous with rare beef, crab cake, pork knuckle, and blood — topped with a bit of rau răm, a squeeze of lime, and a dash of chili satay. Spicy, salty, sweet blend in every spoonful of broth — this is the soul of Hue in a bowl of noodles.
18:00: | Stop 2 — Bánh bèo, bánh nậm, bánh lọc
Continue to a famous bánh bèo shop — where tiny white bánh bèo are steamed hot, topped with shrimp powder, scallion oil, crispy pork skin, and drizzled with sweet fish sauce. You will also try bánh nậm (banana leaf-wrapped cake with shrimp and pork filling) and bánh lọc (clear tapioca dumplings with shrimp) — each with its own flavor and texture. Your guide will show you how to eat the Hue way: use a small spoon, add just enough fish sauce, and savor slowly.
18:30: | Stop 3 — Nem lụi & bánh khoái
Near Trường Tiền Bridge, you visit a shop grilling nem lụi over charcoal. Hue nem lụi is minced pork marinated with mắm ruốc, kneaded until firm, skewered on bamboo sticks, and grilled over charcoal — incredibly fragrant. Wrap it in rice paper with fresh herbs, green banana, and sour star fruit, dip in rich peanut sauce. Alongside is bánh khoái — Hue's version of bánh xèo, but smaller, thicker, and crispier, filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts.
19:15: | Stop 4 — Cơm hến & bún hến
The most rustic yet refined dish of Hue. Cơm hến is cold rice mixed with stir-fried baby clams, mắm ruốc, herbs, peanuts, and crushed crispy rice paper — each spoonful is an explosion of flavors. If you prefer, you can try bún hến instead — sweet clam broth, soft vermicelli, fresh clams.
19:45: | Stop 5 — Chè Huế
End the meal with Hue sweet soup — a dessert paradise of the ancient capital. You can choose: creamy chè bắp Cồn Hến, delicately sweet chè đậu ngự cung đình, surprisingly delicious chè bột lọc heo quay, or refreshing chè sen long nhãn. Each cup is a small work of art.
20:15: | Salted coffee — the perfect finish
You cannot leave Hue without drinking salted coffee. You visit a coffee shop with a view of the Perfume River, order a cup of salted coffee — a layer of creamy salted foam on top, strong black coffee below, stir well and sip. The saltiness enhances the sweetness of the coffee — a strange yet addictive combination.
20:45: | End of tour
Your guide takes you back to your hotel or a central point. You have had a full, happy evening and gained a deeper understanding of Hue — an ancient capital not only beautiful for its tombs but also captivating for its refined cuisine, among the best in Vietnam.
