Overview

Northeast road trip 4D3N: boat trip on Ba Be Lake, Tay ethnic homestay, majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall, enchanting Nguom Ngao Cave. A pristine nature journey for lovers of the northern mountains.

Northeast Vietnam — Land of Mountains and Waterfalls

There is a northeastern region that few travelers know about — where layered limestone mountains embrace Vietnam's largest natural lake, where a majestic waterfall plunges from 30 meters high right on the Vietnam-China border, where Tay ethnic villages nestle against mountain slopes with hundred-year-old stone houses. This is the Ba Be – Ban Gioc 4-day, 3-night journey — one of the most beautiful and pristine road trips in the North.

Unlike Ha Giang — where treacherous passes test your courage, or Sapa — where tourism has developed bustlingly, the Northeast offers a different rhythm: slower, deeper, and more authentic. This journey is for those who have already visited Ha Long, Ninh Binh, Sapa and want to discover a different Vietnam — pristine, less touristy, and stunningly beautiful.

Ba Be Lake — The Green Gem of the Highlands

Ba Be Lake is Vietnam's largest natural freshwater lake, located at an altitude of 150m above sea level, surrounded by layered limestone mountains and the primeval forest of Ba Be National Park. Sitting on a boat on the mirror-like lake surface, you will see mountains reflected in the emerald water, occasionally monkeys jumping on the cliffs, birds singing from the deep forest. The lake was formed over 200 million years ago after a major earthquake — legend says the lake is the remnant of a battle between a dragon and an evil spirit.

You will spend the night at a Tay homestay in Pac Ngoi village — cozy wooden stilt houses by the lake. In the evening, sit by the fire, listen to the host's stories, enjoy corn wine and rustic dishes like grilled lake fish, stir-fried wild vegetables, hill chicken — a local living experience as authentic as it gets.

Ban Gioc Waterfall — A Masterpiece of Nature

From Ba Be, the journey continues to Cao Bang — the northeastern frontier land, where Ban Gioc Waterfall stands majestically on the Vietnam-China border. This is the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia and one of the most beautiful in the world. The white water cascades from a height of 30m, divided into multiple tiers, creating a giant water curtain amidst the majestic mountains. In the rainy season (June-September), the waterfall is fierce and powerful; in the dry season (October-May), it is gentler but still breathtakingly beautiful.

Right next to the waterfall is Nguom Ngao Cave — a limestone cave nearly 2km long with fantastic stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, and strange natural formations. And not to be missed is Khuoi Ky Stone Village — a Tay village with houses built entirely of stone, hundreds of years old, nestled against towering limestone mountains.

Detailed Itinerary

1

Day 1

Hanoi – Bac Kan – Ba Be Lake – Pac Ngoi Village

07:00: | Depart from Hanoi
Car and guide pick you up at your hotel in central Hanoi. The journey begins — leaving the bustling city behind, heading northeast. The first leg is about 230km, passing through peaceful midland villages of Thai Nguyen, with lush green tea hills lining both sides of the road. On the way, the guide introduces the history of the Northeast region, the culture of the Tay and Nung people, and interesting stories about the journey ahead.
09:30: | Rest stop
Stop at a rest station; you can enjoy coffee, Thai Nguyen tea, or buy some snacks. This is also when you start to feel the fresher air as you move further from the city.
12:00: | Local lunch
Stop at a local restaurant in the Bac Kan area. Lunch features rustic mountain dishes: grilled hill chicken with honey, stir-fried wild vegetables with garlic, crispy fried stream fish, sour soup with lake fish. A simple but flavorful meal to recharge for the afternoon leg.
14:30: | Arrive at Ba Be National Park
The car enters Ba Be National Park. As soon as you arrive, you feel a clear change: cool air, limestone mountains rising everywhere, and the green of the old forest covering the view. This is one of Vietnam's most important nature reserves, with a diverse ecosystem of over 1,200 plant species and 600 animal species.
15:00: | Check-in homestay in Pac Ngoi village
Arrive at Pac Ngoi village — a small Tay village nestled by the shore of Ba Be Lake. You check into a traditional wooden stilt house homestay: ironwood floor with natural wood scent, white linens, windows opening to the lake and mountain view. The homestay here is not a luxury resort — it is cozy, sincere, and close to nature.
16:00: | Walk around the lakeside village
In the afternoon, take a gentle walk around the village: admire traditional stilt houses, lush vegetable gardens by the stream, ducks swimming on the lake. You will meet Tay children with innocent smiles, elderly people weaving fabric on the porch. If you want more activity, you can rent a bicycle to ride around the village or kayak on the lake (optional extra).
18:30: | Homestay dinner — the soul of the experience
This is the most anticipated moment of the day. The homestay host prepares a dinner with typical Tay dishes: Ba Be lake fish grilled over charcoal dipped in green chili salt, boiled hill pork with fragrant fish sauce, stir-fried wild vegetables with garlic, sour fish soup cooked with fermented rice, and not to miss a cup of aromatic corn wine. You sit around the fire, listen to the host tell stories about village life, the legend of Ba Be Lake, and the golden rice seasons on the hillsides.

Overnight at Ba Be homestay — fall asleep to the sound of crickets and the faint scent of the forest.

Day 2

Ba Be Lake Boat Trip – Puong Cave – Dau Dang Waterfall – Cao Bang

07:00: | Breakfast at homestay
Wake up to the sound of roosters and Ba Be morning mist. Simple but warm breakfast: sticky rice, fried eggs, drip coffee or hot tea — enough to get you ready for a day of lake exploration.
08:00: | Board boat to explore Ba Be Lake
A small wooden boat takes you from the pier, gliding on the mirror-like lake surface. Ba Be Lake is actually three interconnected lakes — Pe Lam, Pe Lu, Pe Leng — stretching nearly 8km among layered limestone mountains. The water is so clear you can see schools of fish swimming below. Around, the primeval forest covers the hillsides, occasionally echoing with bird calls and distant gibbon cries.
09:00: | An Ma Temple & Widow Island
The boat stops at An Ma Temple — an ancient temple on a small island in the lake, where locals worship the protective spirits of the lake. The guide tells you the legend of the Dragon King and the battle with the evil spirit that created Ba Be Lake — a story rich in Vietnamese epic. Then the boat continues to Widow Island with a centuries-old kapok tree.
10:00: | Puong Cave — underground river wonder

The boat takes you through Puong Cave — a natural cave over 300m long through the mountain. The boat glides slowly in the dark, light from both ends creating mystical streaks on the water. On the cave ceiling, thousands of bats hang sleeping — a sight both eerie and fascinating. This is one of the most unique experiences of the journey.

11:30: | Dau Dang Waterfall — power of the mountains
If weather and water level permit, the boat continues to Dau Dang Waterfall — a waterfall between two limestone cliffs, where water plunges from above creating white foam. You can walk along the trail beside the waterfall, feel the cool mist on your face, and listen to the powerful sound of nature.
12:30: | Local lunch
Back on shore, lunch at a local restaurant with familiar but always delicious dishes after a morning on the lake.
13:30: | Depart for Cao Bang
The car takes you away from Ba Be, continuing towards Cao Bang. The journey is about 150km through winding passes, valleys full of wildflowers, and Tay and Nung villages nestled on hillsides. This is one of the most beautiful routes in the Northeast — every turn is a new photo opportunity.
17:30: | Arrive in Cao Bang / Trung Khanh
Arrive, check in to hotel or guesthouse. You have time to rest and freshen up after a long day of travel.
19:00: | Dinner — Cao Bang cuisine
Dinner at a local restaurant with famous Cao Bang specialties: 7-flavor roasted duck (the most famous roasted duck in the North), Cao Bang sour pho, egg rolls, smoked sausages. A dinner rich in borderland flavors.

Day 3

Ban Gioc Waterfall – Nguom Ngao Cave – Khuoi Ky Stone Village

07:00: | Breakfast at hotel
Light breakfast before a day exploring the most important highlights of the journey.
08:00: | Depart for Ban Gioc Waterfall
The car takes you along the Vietnam-China border road, heading towards Trung Khanh. On both sides are layered limestone mountains, cornfields, terraced rice paddies, and small Nung villages. The border atmosphere has a unique beauty — pristine, quiet, and mysterious.
09:00: | Ban Gioc Waterfall — awe at the wonder
When Ban Gioc Waterfall appears before your eyes, you will understand why it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the planet. The white water from a height of 30m divides into three tiers, cascading like a giant silk sheet amidst the majestic mountains. The thunderous sound of the waterfall echoes throughout the valley, cool mist hitting your face even from hundreds of meters away. In the distance is the Vietnam-China border marker, where the Quay Son River divides the two countries. You have time to walk along the trails, take photos from different angles — every angle is a lifetime photo.
10:00: | Bamboo raft to the foot of the waterfall (optional extra)
If you want a stronger sensation, you can take a bamboo raft to the foot of the waterfall — where the water plunges down, creating white foam right in front of you. The feeling of standing in the water, letting the cool droplets splash on you, hearing the roar of the waterfall — nothing beats it!
11:00: | Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda
From the waterfall area, hike up to Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda on a small hill. From the pagoda courtyard, the entire Ban Gioc valley unfolds with the waterfall, fields, and layered mountains — a stunning panoramic view.
12:00: | Local lunch
Lunch at a restaurant in the Trung Khanh area — simple but flavorful border dishes.
13:30: | Nguom Ngao Cave — underground labyrinth
Just a few kilometers from Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave is another wonder of Cao Bang. The limestone cave is nearly 2km long with stalactites, stalagmites, and stone pillars formed over millions of years. Lighting enhances the mystical beauty of each rock formation: some look like frozen waterfalls, some like giant stone organs, some like dancing fairies. You walk along the built path inside the cave, admiring and marveling at the miracle of nature. Remember to wear sports shoes — the cave floor can be damp and slippery.
15:00: | Khuoi Ky Stone Village — imprint of time
The last stop of the day: Khuoi Ky Stone Village — a Tay village with houses built entirely of stone, hundreds of years old. The stone walls are stacked without mortar, the yin-yang tile roofs are mossy, the stone-paved paths wind through the village. You will meet elderly people sitting on the porch, children playing on the village paths — life here seems to have stopped centuries ago. This is a beautiful spot for local culture photos — where you can truly feel the soul of the Northeast region.
16:30: | Return to accommodation
The car takes you back to the hotel. Time to rest after a long day of exploration.
19:00: | Dinner — farewell to Cao Bang
The last dinner in Cao Bang — enjoy your favorite specialties again before leaving this land tomorrow.
