Ha Long Bay on Land — a full day amidst stunning mountains and rivers
Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Trang An or Tam Coc – Hang Mua – Hanoi
Ninh Binh 1 day tour from Hanoi: boat ride through magnificent caves at Trang An or Tam Coc, climb Hang Mua for panoramic views. The easiest day trip in Northern Vietnam for nature lovers.
If Ha Long is a wonder of the sea, then Ninh Binh is a love song of mountains and rivers. Only 100km from Hanoi, Ninh Binh reveals a completely different world: towering limestone karsts rising above lush rice paddies, winding rivers meandering through mysterious caves, and ancient temples nestled against cliffs. This land was once the first capital of Vietnam under the Dinh – Le dynasties, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Ninh Binh 1 day tour is the perfect choice for those in Hanoi wanting a day to escape the city, immerse in nature, and capture unforgettable photos.
The special feature of this tour is that you can choose the boat experience that suits your preference:
Trang An — Majestic Heritage: Board a small rowboat paddled by a local, journey through 9 natural caves and 3 enclosed valleys within the mountains. Each cave is a world of its own: Dai Cave stretches like a time tunnel, Sang Cave with sunlight streaming onto crystal-clear water, Nau Ruou Cave linked to the legend of King Dinh. Over 2.5 – 3 hours, you'll pass ancient temples, moss-covered cliffs, and breathtaking pristine nature. Trang An is ideal for those seeking a vast, diverse, and majestic heritage landscape.
Tam Coc — Picturesque Countryside: Glide gently on a bamboo boat along the romantic Ngo Dong River, flanked by endless rice fields. The 2-hour journey takes you through 3 caves (Tam Coc = Three Caves), each with unique beauty and stalactites hanging from the ceiling. During the rice harvest season (May-June), Tam Coc transforms into a brilliant golden sea — one of the most photographed scenes in Vietnam. Tam Coc suits romantic souls who love peaceful rural scenery.
After a lunch of Ninh Binh specialties (crispy rice, mountain goat, mountain snails), you'll conquer Hang Mua — an unmissable highlight. 486 stone steps along the mountainside lead to the summit, where the entire Tam Coc area unfolds like a giant ink-wash painting. From above, you'll see the Ngo Dong River winding like a green silk ribbon, tiny bamboo boats drifting lazily, and lush rice fields stretching to the horizon. This is the most famous Instagram spot in Ninh Binh — where every traveler wants a photo.

10:15 | Boat experience — choose Trang An or Tam Coc
This is the most anticipated moment. You choose one of two experiences:
Option A — Trang An (World Heritage):
Board a small rowboat, a local paddles you through a system of 9 caves and 3 enclosed valleys within the mountains. Each cave is a masterpiece of nature — stalactites hanging from the ceiling, crystal-clear water reflecting shimmering light. You'll visit ancient temples nestled against cliffs, once places of meditation for kings. The journey lasts 2.5 – 3 hours, enough to fully appreciate the majestic beauty of the heritage site.
Option B — Tam Coc (Three Caves):
Glide on a bamboo boat along the Ngo Dong River, passing through 3 natural caves. On both banks are lush green rice fields (or golden if visiting during harvest season in May-June) and layered limestone mountains. The atmosphere is peaceful and romantic; occasionally you'll see locals rowing with their feet — a unique technique of Ninh Binh people. The journey is about 2 hours.
12:30 | Lunch with Ninh Binh specialties
At a local restaurant, enjoy lunch with famous Ninh Binh specialties: crispy rice with goat sauce, stir-fried mountain goat or lime-served goat, boiled mountain snails with ginger fish sauce, wild vegetable soup, and steamed rice. A meal rich in the flavors of the Northern countryside.
13:45 | Transfer to Hang Mua
After lunch, the car takes you to Hang Mua — the best panoramic viewpoint in Ninh Binh, just minutes from Tam Coc.
14:15 | Conquer Hang Mua peak
486 stone steps along the mountainside — it sounds like a lot, but it only takes 20-30 minutes to reach the top. The higher you go, the more spectacular the view. At the summit, the entire Tam Coc area unfolds before you like a giant ink-wash painting: the Ngo Dong River winding like a green silk ribbon, tiny bamboo boats drifting lazily, rice fields stretching to the horizon. Two viewpoints: the dragon peak on the left offers the widest view, the peak on the right gives the classic Instagram-worthy check-in spot.
15:45 | Free time to explore & take photos
Relax after the climb. You can stroll around the foot of the mountain, drink fresh coconut water, or simply sit and enjoy the scenery and fresh air.
