Hanoi — Where a Thousand Years of History Converge on Every Street

Hanoi is not just the capital — it's a living museum with over 1,000 years of history, where every street corner tells a story. From the small alleys of the Old Quarter's 36 streets to the solemn space of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, from the ancient charm of the Temple of Literature to the romantic beauty of Hoan Kiem Lake in the early morning — the Hanoi & Old Quarter Highlights Tour by Vibe Vietnam Tours is designed for you to fully experience the soul of the capital in just one day.

This is an ideal tour for first-time visitors to Hanoi — whether you are a free independent traveler, a couple, a family with young children, or a business traveler with only a few hours to spare. The itinerary is flexible with 3 options: half-day for those short on time, full-day for the most complete experience, and evening for those who want to explore Hanoi at night with street food, egg coffee, and water puppetry.

Why Choose This Tour?

We don't take you on the beaten path. The local guides of Vibe Vietnam Tours are true Hanoi locals — they know which egg coffee shop is the best in the Old Quarter, which photo spot is the most beautiful at Hoan Kiem Lake at sunset, and which small alley hides historical stories not found in guidebooks. You will hear about the real Hanoi — not the Hanoi in travel brochures.

Tour Highlights

  • Ba Dinh Square & Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum — the political and historical heart of Vietnam, where you stand before the sacred space of the nation

Detailed Itinerary

1

Day 1

Full-Day: Complete Hanoi — From Sunrise to Sunset (8:00 - 17:00)

08:00: Good Morning Hanoi
Private car and guide pick you up at your hotel in the central area. On the way, the guide provides an overview of the history of Thang Long - Hanoi, culture, and people of the capital — the best way to start a day of exploration.
08:30: Ba Dinh Square & Ho Chi Minh Complex
The first stop is the historic Ba Dinh Square — where President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in 1945. You will visit the area of Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (outside or inside depending on opening schedule), One Pillar Pagoda — the most uniquely structured pagoda in Vietnam, and the Presidential Palace garden. Note: The Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays, as well as two months of annual maintenance (usually October-November). If closed, we will adjust the itinerary flexibly.
10:15: Temple of Literature — Quoc Tu Giam
Stepping through the gates of the Temple of Literature, you feel transported to another space in the middle of busy Hanoi. Built in 1070 under King Ly Thanh Tong, this is the first university of Vietnam — where thousands of Confucian scholars were trained over nearly 1,000 years. Walking among the stone steles bearing the names of doctors (recognized by UNESCO as World Documentary Heritage), you will feel the deep-rooted tradition of learning of the Vietnamese. Don't forget to touch the turtle's head on the doctoral stele — it is said to bring luck in studies and exams!
12:00: Hanoi Lunch
Stop at a carefully selected local restaurant. Suggested menu: bun cha (the dish Obama ate), beef pho, spring rolls, or vegetarian dishes upon request. Lunch is not just to fill your stomach — it's also an opportunity to learn more about Hanoi's culinary culture through the guide's stories.
13:30: Hoa Lo Prison (Hilton Hanoi)
An unmissable stop for history lovers. Hoa Lo Prison — nicknamed the "Hilton Hanoi" during the war — tells the story of a tumultuous period through vivid exhibits, images, and reconstructed spaces. From dark cells to the stories of American pilots — everything is told authentically and emotionally.
15:00: Hoan Kiem Lake & Ngoc Son Temple
Return to the center, stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake — the green heart of Hanoi. Cross the red The Huc Bridge to reach Ngoc Son Temple on a small island in the lake. The guide will tell you the legend of King Le Loi returning the sword to the Golden Turtle — the story that gave this iconic lake its name. This is also the ideal time for photos — the golden sunlight on the lake, the red The Huc Bridge standing out against the blue sky.
16:00: Old Quarter 36 Streets
The most exciting part of the day: getting lost in the maze of Hanoi's Old Quarter. You will walk through streets named after traditional trades: Hang Bac (silver jewelry), Hang Ma (votive offerings and traditional toys), Hang Dao (fabrics), Hang Gai (silk), Hang Quat (paper fans)... The guide will take you into small alleys known only to Hanoians, where hidden egg coffee shops over 70 years old, ancient temples nestled amid the streets, and stories of old Hanoi — a time when each street was a craft village, each resident an artisan.
17:00: Drop-off at Hoan Kiem Lake or Hotel
End of tour at Hoan Kiem Lake or your hotel. You can continue the evening with a water puppet show (optional), dinner in the Old Quarter, or enjoy a cocktail on a rooftop overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake at night.

Day 2

Half-Day: Essence of Hanoi Morning (8:00 - 12:30)

A condensed version for travelers short on time but still wanting to capture the soul of Hanoi. The morning itinerary focuses on the three most iconic spots: Ba Dinh Square & Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, and Temple of Literature — the unmissable trio when visiting Hanoi. End the morning with a bowl of hot pho or an egg coffee at an Old Quarter cafe. Suitable for transit travelers, business travelers, or those who want a gentle start before exploring Hanoi independently in the afternoon.

Day 3

Evening: Hanoi at Night — Old Quarter, Food & Water Puppet Show (17:30 - 21:30)

When the sun sets, Hanoi takes on a completely different appearance — romantic, mystical, and full of energy. The evening tour begins with a walk through the brightly lit Old Quarter, stopping at the majestic St. Joseph's Cathedral in golden light. Continue with a street food tour — you'll taste bun cha, spring rolls, banh mi, sweet soup, fruit salad, and of course, egg coffee at a hidden cafe on the second floor of the Old Quarter. The highlight of the evening is a water puppet show — a unique traditional art form dating back to the 11th century, where wooden puppets "dance" on water telling folk tales. End with a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake at night — the ancient Turtle Tower reflecting on the still lake.
