Overview
This private four-day, three-night tour runs from Ha Giang city across the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau to Du Già, with a local driver and an English-speaking guide who also advises on photography. Days are organised around the hours when light usually works, and the driving in between. When weather or road conditions change the plan, the guide adjusts the stops instead of pushing through.
Ha Giang Photography Expedition: Light Across the Karst Plateau
The Dong Van Karst Plateau is a UNESCO geopark of grey limestone peaks, deep river gorges and villages of the Hmong, Tay and Lo Lo peoples.
This 4-day, 3-night tour is built for people who carry a camera. The days are planned around morning and evening light at Tham Ma Pass, Ma Pi Leng Pass, Tu San Gorge and Sung La Valley, with the driving fitted in between.
There is time for portraits as well as landscapes: weavers in roadside Hmong villages, Lo Lo Chai below the Lung Cu Flag Tower, and village life in Du Gia. Ask people before you photograph them.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Ha Giang City – Quan Ba Heaven Gate – Can Ty Pass – Yen Minh
- Pick-up in Ha Giang City by private vehicle
- Early light at Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the Twin Mountains
- Photo stop at the lone nghien tree on Can Ty Pass
- Roadside Hmong villages: weaving and daily farm work
- Sunset over the pine hills of Yen Minh
- Check in at Yen Minh, review photos and have dinner
Day 2
Tham Ma Pass S-Curves – Sung La Valley – Lo Lo Chai – Sunset at Ma Pi Leng
- Early start for the first sun on the S-bends of Tham Ma Pass
- Photo walk in Sung La Valley: rammed-earth walls, stone fences and seasonal buckwheat flowers
- Lo Lo Chai village below the Lung Cu Flag Tower, with portraits of Lo Lo women in embroidered clothing
- Afternoon climb to Ma Pi Leng Pass, with wide and telephoto lenses ready for sunset
- Evening light on the Nho Que River gorge below the pass
- Drive to Dong Van for dinner and a night walk through the old quarter
Day 3
Dawn at Ma Pi Leng – Nho Que River Boat – Tu San Gorge – Mau Due – Du Gia
- Early start for sunrise over the Ma Pi Leng ridge
- Go down to the river for a boat trip into Tu San Gorge, looking up at the limestone walls
- Photos of the boats on the river, with a telephoto lens or drone where permitted
- Drive over Mau Due Pass, stopping at small stone hamlets
- Arrive in Du Gia Valley: streams, waterwheels and Tay stilt houses
- Du Gia waterfall and dinner with a local family at the homestay
Day 4
Morning Mist in Du Gia Valley – Mountain Return – Ha Giang City
- Morning mist over the stilt houses and rice fields of Du Gia
- Portraits and daily life in the village
- Breakfast, then the return drive along the stream road to Ha Giang City
