This is the Hà Giang loop done by car instead of motorbike. A local driver who knows the pass roads takes you from Hà Giang City through Quản Bạ, Yên Minh, Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc, and an English-speaking guide stays with you for the whole trip.
You cross Thẩm Mã Pass, visit the Vương family palace at Sa Phìn, stop at the Lũng Cú flag tower near the Chinese border, and drive the Mã Pì Lèng Pass. On day three you take a boat along the Nho Quế River through the Tu Sản gorge, where the cliffs on both sides are some of the highest in the region.
You sleep in lodges and guesthouses along the route, starting with H’Mong Village Resort in Quản Bạ. Private rooms are given priority at each stop, within what each area offers.

Day 1
Hà Giang City – Quản Bạ Heaven Gate – H’Mong Village Resort
- Pickup in Hà Giang City by your private car and driver
- Drive up Bắc Sum Pass onto the Đồng Văn karst plateau
- Stop at Quản Bạ Heaven Gate and the Twin Mountains (Núi Đôi Cô Tiên)
- Visit Lùng Tám village to see Hmong women weave flax linen by hand
- Check in at H’Mong Village Resort, overlooking Tráng Kìm valley
- Dinner at the resort
Day 2
Thẩm Mã Pass – Sủng Là Valley – Sa Phìn Palace – Lũng Cú – Đồng Văn
- Breakfast at the resort
- Drive over the hairpin bends of Thẩm Mã Pass
- Visit Sủng Là Valley and the house used in the film "Pao’s Story", with its rammed-earth walls and stone fences
- Tour the Vương family palace (Dinh Vua Mèo) at Sa Phìn, which mixes French, Chinese and Hmong building styles
- Climb to the Lũng Cú national flag tower at the northern end of Vietnam
- Check in at your lodge in Đồng Văn Old Quarter
- Dinner of black chicken hotpot, then a walk around the old quarter
Day 3
Mã Pì Lèng Pass – Nho Quế River – Tu Sản Gorge – Mèo Vạc
- Breakfast in Đồng Văn
- Drive Mã Pì Lèng Pass, the cliff road known as the Happiness Road
- Stop at the viewpoints over the gorge
- Go down to the river pier and, if your package includes it, take a boat along the Nho Quế River
- See Tu Sản gorge, whose walls are among the deepest in the region
- Riverside lunch with grilled freshwater fish and local dishes
- Check in at your lodge in Mèo Vạc (Auberge de Mèo Vạc or similar)
- Dinner at the lodge
Day 4
Mèo Vạc – M-Bend – Mậu Duệ – Hà Giang City
- Breakfast in Mèo Vạc
- Walk through the Mèo Vạc market if your trip falls on a market day
- Drive back via the Mậu Duệ valley
- Photo stop at the M-shaped hairpin bends
- Lunch at a restaurant along the way
- Arrive in Hà Giang City in the afternoon, ready for your transfer back to Hanoi
