Fansipan is the highest peak in Indochina, and this day tour gets you to the top without a multi-day trek. You start in Sapa town, ride out to Muong Hoa Station, then ride over the valley's terraced rice fields on a three-rope cable car before the mountain opens into a cloud-level sanctuary of temples, gardens and stone stairways.

Up top, the pace is yours. Visit the bronze Amitabha Buddha, step into Kim Son Bao Thang Tu and Bich Van Thien Tu temples, and climb the final stairs to the 3,143 m marker, the "Roof of Indochina", for a 360-degree view across the Hoang Lien Son range. When the clouds roll in below you, the summit looks like the shore of a white sea.

In the afternoon you return to Sapa for a slow walk past the French-era stone church and around the town lake, with street-grilled skewers and a cup of táo mèo (tangy mountain apple) tea or wine to finish. One day covers both the summit and the town.

Good to Know Before You Go

• Dress in layers. The summit is noticeably cooler and windier than Sapa town, and mist can arrive within minutes.
• Wear shoes with grip. The summit complex has stone stairs and walking sections even though the cable car does the heavy lifting.
• Clouds decide the view. Check the forecast the evening before; early mornings are often clearest.
• Guide language. The standard guide speaks Vietnamese. Korean-, Chinese- or Japanese-speaking guides can be added; contact us to confirm other languages.
• Lunch is flexible. It is not included, so you can try the local salmon hotpot or add a buffet at Fansipan or in Sapa.

How much does the Fansipan cable car cost?

As of October 2026, Sun World Fansipan Legend lists a round-trip cable car ticket at about 850,000 VND for adults (roughly US$32–34) and 550,000 VND for children 1–1.4 m tall. Children under 1 m ride free. The Muong Hoa funicular from Sapa town costs about 200,000 VND return. How do I get to the Fansipan cable car from Sapa?

The cable car starts at Hoang Lien Station in Muong Hoa Valley, just outside Sapa town. The scenic way is the Muong Hoa funicular from Sapa Station, next to Sun Plaza, up to Hoang Lien Station. On this tour your guide meets you at your hotel and takes care of the route. Coming from Hanoi, you can add a sleeper bus or limousine transfer to Sapa.

What time does the Fansipan cable car open and close?

Sun World lists daily operation from about 07:30 to 17:00. The first ride is around 08:00 Monday to Friday and 07:30 on weekends. The last ride up is about 14:30 Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 15:30 on Friday and Saturday. The last ride down is between 16:00 and 17:00 depending on the day. Hours shift with weather and scheduled maintenance, so check before you travel.

Is the Fansipan cable car worth it?

Yes, especially on a clear day. The ride replaces what used to be a two-day trek with about 15 minutes of flying over Muong Hoa Valley, and the Mt Fansipan summit complex adds temples, the bronze Amitabha Buddha and the 3,143 m marker. Is the Fansipan cable car safe?

The Fansipan cable car was built by Doppelmayr Garaventa of Austria and opened in 2016. It holds Guinness World Records as the longest non-stop three-rope cable car (6,292.5 m) and for the greatest elevation difference of its type (about 1,410 m). The operator states that the system is inspected daily to European standards, and rides can be paused in severe weather. The glass cabins hold around 35 passengers.

How long should I spend on Fansipan, and when is the best time to go?

Plan on three to four hours at Sun World Fansipan Legend. The calmest and clearest window is usually 08:00–09:30; late afternoon after 15:00 is also quiet. Between 10:00 and 14:00, especially on weekends and holidays, queues can reach 30–45 minutes in the September–November peak season.
